Tonight at Lincoln Christian School in the elementary gym you can attend a concert “Nebraska Prairie – Memories Last” that celebrates the state’s sesquicentennial.  This is actually a  “Nebraska 150 Celebration Official Event.”  Mr. Phil Boehr, the longtime music teacher, compiled the program and even arranged some of the songs that highlight Nebraska’s history.  The school nurse, Maureen Stahr, and her husband, Bruce, perform an original song with the students as well.  I was privileged to attend the matinee performance this afternoon.  If you are able to attend the 7:00 show tonight, you are in for a treat.

Many famous Nebraskans show up in costume to tell the tale of the history of the state.  From Merriweather Lewis to homesteaders to J. Sterling Morton to Chief Standing Bear, you can hear first person narratives presented by the older elementary students.  The songs are mostly original although many of the songs are set to familiar tunes.  All of them tell of Nebraska’s strong history.  The following themes are a part of the show.

  • Nebraska Native American Tribes
  • The Prairie of Nebraska
  • Sod House Living
  • The Circuit Preacher
  • A traditional square dance tune
  • “Beautiful Nebraska”
  • Arbor Day
  • Chief Standing Bear
  • North Platte Canteen
  • “There is No Place Like Nebraska”
  • “God bless America”

From the start of the show to the end, you will learn more about Nebraska.

Why you want to attend this event …

Many of the songs are set to familiar tunes.  What I appreciate is the fact that the words were put up in the screen, so you could sing (or at least follow) along.  I think this program is extremely well done and provides an excellent background into Nebraska history.

Before the Nebraska portion starts, you will enjoy listening to the 5th and 6th grade strings as well as the 5th and 6th grade band.  For any big screen movie fans, you will definitely recognize one of the tunes.  (May the 4th be with you!)

This “Nebraska Prairie – Memories Last” concert is one where the songs will resonate with you as they all highlight life in Nebraska.
