Memorial Day at Lincoln’s Wyuka Cemetery

Today I fully intended on telling you more about the background of Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln. Yet when I drove by earlier today, another story ended up writing itself. Seeing the red, white and blue flying proudly across the grounds inspired me to recall just what Memorial Day is all about.

Despite having been to Wyuka Cemetery twice last week to take pictures, I still felt like something was missing. After supper, I drove back over to actually drive through again, and I am so glad I did. In fact, I think going to Wyuka just might become an annual Memorial Day Tradition because being there definitely moved me to remember. Being greeted with rows of American flags was part of it as well as driving through the winding paths around the grave sites. Although as far I know, I do not know anyone buried there, being in this location reminded me of my grandparents and of the solemnness of the day.

The “Soldier’s Circle” can be found in Lincoln at Wyuka Cemetery

This section, the “Soldier’s Circle” still brings me to tears every time. Seeing the names of those who fought for our country is so meaningful. Knowing that each one impacted the lives of Nebraskans by fighting for liberty. The flags were just brought out in honor of Memorial’s Day which is another reason I want to venture back again next year.

Visit the Civil War section in Lincoln’s Wyuka Cemetery

One interesting section in this cemetery is the Civil War area. Since Nebraska did not even become a state until after the Civil War, having so many Civil War veterans there intrigued me. Then I learned that Nebraska was actually founded on the backs of these veterans who learned to call Nebraska home after the war was over.

This Civil War statue soldier signifies the important part that all Veterans have played in making Nebraska the fine state that it is today.

P.S. Obviously this post took on a different direction than I originally intended. While I do plan on sharing more about the history of Wyuka, I am glad that I was able to see the flags and share them with you.
