Maintaining a historic record takes considerable time and effort. Through the process of researching A History Lover’s Guide to Lincoln, I came across two churches that had volunteer historians who have done a fabulous job of collecting bits of history. Martha Sorensen of First Baptist Church in downtown Lincoln is one of them. She began attending the church as a young adult and has been a part of the congregation for well over fifty years. Even though I did not know very many of the people, I still enjoyed looking through her collections.

Other church members are also proud of their church. Many models and drawings of the church are on display.

First Baptist Lincoln

What is fascinating about this church is the fact that rather than continuing to maintain their imposing Gothic structure, First Baptist decided to start over with a modern building in the 1960s. One driving by would assume that this is a newer church to Lincoln. But that is not the case.

Along with several other churches in Lincoln, First Baptist celebrated their sesquicentennial in 2019.  150 years of service to the community is a long time.

More to come …
