Life is all about the momentous and mundane.  Saying “no” to one thing, so that you can say “yes” to another.  Balancing the scheduled and spontaneous.  I think I tend to be a bit too structured, but I am learning that sometimes having limits is okay.  What is all of this musing about when I am supposed to be posting about fun?  Obviously I must be feeling a bit reflective this evening.

Earlier this week we had to say “no” to joining our co-op friends at Martin’s Hillside Orchard.  This definitely made me feel sad, especially once I saw all of the fun pictures.  Yet I want my kids to learn that responsibilities must come first.  Tonight two of my kids said “yes” to walking over to the stadium near our house to experience part of the Friday Night Lights.  My team evidently had a great comeback attempt near the end of the game, but the part we watched was not exactly pretty.

This week-end we are enjoying more extended family time to celebrate my Mom’s birthday and watching for a hopeful Husker win down at Miami.  I am so thankful that we can celebrate all together!

Nebraska City AppleJack Festival

This does mean that we have to say “no” to attending the Nebraska City AppleJack Festival which had started today and goes on through Sunday.  Since our family did get to enjoy that experience last year, I am perfectly fine with not battling the crowds.  If you have never been, it definitely is a fun family experience!  Pick a good parking spot and plan on walking.  My goodness that town is packed for the festival!  One of our favorite events was an impromptu stop at a church carnival.  Definitely plenty of options for everyone.

If apples are not “apeeling” to you (:-) ), then perhaps you should check out the Art Walk in Aurora.  All kinds of events will be happening across the town.  Including the opportunity to meet Aurora native and amazing illustrator, Preston McDaniels at Susan’s Books and Gifts from 10-4.  His children’s books are so great, and so is Susan’s store.  Definitely a fun combo and opportunity.

With school starting, I have not kept up with updating the Nebraska area events (you can always find that info on my home page).  I am hoping to get back to highlighting some of the best options across the state for family fun.  That way you can pick which events you need to say “no” to attending and even better the ones that you get to say “yes” and go enjoy.  A bit of balance is a good thing.  However you decide to experience Nebraska this week-end, I hope it is enjoyable for you!

Two more important things of note from Nebraska Educational Television

Look for another fun NET giveaway coming early next week.  NET is about to feature Willa Cather in a way that you have not seen her before.  This 30 minute documentary relays recently discovered letters about her life.  Stay tuned for more on Monday.

Speaking of NET giveaways, I am FINALLY announcing my latest winner.  Congratulations to Marsha on winning the Nebraskaland Magazine subscription.  Please e-mail odysseythroughnebraska@gmail.com with your address, so we can get that sent your way! 🙂
