I was taking the backroads because sometimes I get tired of the Interstate. We were traveling from Hastings to Aurora using Highway 6 to Highway 14. Although I was watching the road, I do not remember too many details of the trip other than the fact that I love the wide open spaces of south central Nebraska. Then suddenly I caught something out of the corner of my eye.
I do know that we were on Highway 14. But to find the exact location would require a return trip. I do know that this Oregon Trail Monument was on the edge of a field. Crops were still growing near this piece of history.
Thankfully I did have the foresight to take a picture of the marker since it is not visible in the bigger picture. This is the location of the Nebraska City- Fort Kearny Trail Cutoff. In other words, if you continued on from the Spring Creek Prairie location, you would wind up passing right along this marker.
More about this Nebraska detour stop coming soon …
