Last night we made the trek to Beatrice to watch The Keys to the Kingdom at Christ Community Church. This musical was written by some longtime friends of mine, and I was excited to finally get to see one of their musicals. I was surprised by the content but definitely not disappointed.
Using a cell phone from several rows back did not make for the best picture, but you at least get a bit of the idea!
If you attend a concert in December usually at some point you will see or hear sheep or a donkey or tinsel. This play was not like that. An allegory with hints of the original Christmas story, this play was set in the land of Arcadia. The costumes were beautiful, the staging impressive and the music added a lovely element to the show.
Since obviously this is an unfamiliar story (due to the fact it was only written several months ago), I thought it would be fun to write a “press release” of sorts that gives hints to the plot.

Why: A new heir to the throne has arrived. The former next-in-line, Guenivere might not be so happy about her nephew’s arrival. What lengths will she go to protect what she feels is her rightful place of Queen?
Like all good medieval events, there is merriment and pageantry and even a curse. Who will hold the keys to the kingdom? This play is based off Isaiah 22:22 “I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”
My daughter’s favorite was definitely the jester, Pip – we heard about her and McDonald’s apple pies the rest of the night. (Yes, that is a behind-the-scenes part of the play). My boys enjoyed the storyline as well. I loved the fact that it caused me to think about Christmas in a whole other way. You have two more chances to catch their performances.
